Planting Seeds
New position aids in staff recruitment efforts

Unity House has created a new position dedicated to building its future pool of direct support professionals. The key goals of the Outreach Coordinator post are to situate Unity House as an employer of choice in the communities we serve, and encourage young people to consider pursuing a career in human services.
“The position is a perfect fit for my energy, enthusiasm, and passion for introducing the next generation of workers to Unity House,” said Mary Simpson, a long-time Unity House employee who became the Outreach Coordinator in 2024.
Mary regularly visits high schools, BOCES, and community colleges in central New York, and tables at various community events. She meets with guidance counselors and students to showcase Unity House’s career opportunities.
“I’m planting seeds,” said Mary. “I meet with youth from 9th grade and up to discuss their career aspirations, and suggest career paths that may be mutually beneficial. If they are interested in human services, there is a pathway for them that leads to a rewarding career as a direct support professional. In return, Unity House and similar organizations get bright, well-trained future employees. It’s a win-win.”
Mary says that students are interested to know that Unity House will help them earn credentials from regional community colleges so they can boost their wages.
“This credential opportunity really sets students up for success,” Mary explained. “They are furthering their education and skills, and increasing their earning potential into the future.”
